When we were in high school, my brother and I decided to teach ourselves how to knit. In the early 70's, there weren't many options for yarn and patterns. Discouraged with the feel of the acrylic yarn I'd bought, and teaching myself incorrectly to boot (I later learned I was twisting my purl stitches), I gave up pretty quickly. Gus, however, persevered.
Fast forward to 1987. My husband and I had 3 young daughters, ages 2, 3 and 6. We were living in a small town in the Sierra Nevada and I thought that if I were ever to get into Mother Heaven I'd have to make clothing for our daughters. Knitting came to mind - warm hats, mittens and sweaters were needed. And maybe this would be something I could do better than my brother, who was and remains a wonderfully talented knitter.
I signed up for classes from Diane Soucy through the local rec center. I learned so much from her so quickly! She encouraged me to join her weekly knitting group and to sign up for workshops. My 3rd or 4th project was a Fair Isle sweater that I designed myself.
I'm currently teaching knitting at three different LYS's and I also teach spinning. I hope I can inspire the way that teachers and fellow knitters have inspired me.
Three years ago my friend Jeanne Giles suggested we start writing patterns, publishing them under the name, 2AskewDesigns. Had she not pushed, prodded and cajoled, I'm sure I never would have kept up with the designing. I sure owe that sister a LOT! We recently agreed that we were approaching our designs from different directions, and that one company couldn't possible hold all of our ideas, so we made the decision to split into two separate companies. Hence the birth of knittinIt and re-birth of 2AskewDesigns.
I'm really excited about this new road I'm travelling down. Visit my pattern page to see available patterns, and my blog to see what's on the needles.
